For the Contemporary Quilt Group Journal Quilts 2009 the challenge was to make them 6” by 12” (15 X 30 cm), either portrait or landscape orientated.

For this years theme I have choosen ‘Explore Collage’ and I decided to make all the backgrounds in one go, as a kind of hole cloth, with heavy machine quilting, then cut it into 12 pieces, aprox. 13” x 7” = my blank “canvases” for the whole year.

Materials for the “canvas”: Various textured off-white silks, wadding, commercial cotton (backing) and silk thread.
Technique for the “canvas”: Fused and free-motion machine quilted.
Materials and technique for the collage: ColourCatchers® and cotton threads. Fused and free-motion machine quilting.

And another thing - I just love to read all those inspiring blogs, it just haven't happened lately - so I'm looking forward to get back on track in this matter too.
Update: Regarding the Aurifil Quilt Patchwork and Embroidery Threads I haven't forgotten to test them, only I still have a lot of deadlines and therefore it will have to wait a bit more ;O)

Oh, my my -- these are rich. I love the looseness of your first efforts as well -- contrasts nicely with the close quilting, which is in itself free in its variations. Wonderful!
Glad to see you're back to blogging!
I love the beautiful textured backgrounds, Mai-Britt. It's good to see you in blogland again.
What a good idea to make all the textured backgrounds at once. The first four finished JQs are very impressive.
These are wonderful! I love the colors. The quilting is great. I really like the contrast between the fuller, more organic quilting in the background and the straight lines that extend beyond the "block". Looking forward to seeing the rest.
Oh Gosh, thank you all so much - I'm overwhelmed by your responce..........
I shall get back to looking at your blogs promtly - I have missed you!
Welcome back - missed you!
Thanks Sandra - Did you have a great time in Summer School.
The finished products are very Asian, almost ikat. What a great idea to collage on top of the quilted surfaces. When I am trying out a new quilting pattern, I always start on a white square of sandwiched material which I have stacked next to my machine. Maybe I should do something with those...
Yes, I agree - and it was a total surprice to me - I just layed out the bits last thing in the evening, still liked it in morning and sewed down the bits ;O)
It's a very good idea to use all those samples - post them when you get there........
Great idea ...wonderful results.
I'll be back!
Valerie

They are just beautiful! I really should get back to my journal quilts for this year. I seem to have got stuck in may (landscape). Looking at your work has given me just the push I needed - thank you
Thanks, Sally - don't forget to post your journal quilts on you blog...........
Hi,
YOur inspiration worked - all I have to do now is bind it! May journal done! I'll post it in the next few hours (without binding) The first 4 are already blogged but I will put them with the May one so you can see
What a good idea to make the background in one time. That way you get unity in your quilts, whatever you do with them afterwards.
Thanks Margeeth, sometimes simple ideas works best.................
As soon as my workload lightens up I'm going to try making "blank" canvases. It is a wonderful idea.
Thanks and keep on blogging.
Great idea! I'll think about it for next year :-). For this year I am sticking to the 'my garden' theme.
